Abstract:

For decades, productivity and innovation in the pharmaceutical industry have declined. It has been slow to transform digitally and culturally. This research describes how executives can lead change by harnessing Web3 technologies. The payoffs will be greater internal rates of return on drug discovery and personalized medicine, and more efficient and secure clinical trials and supply chains among other significant benefits.

Can Blockchain Help with Gun Registries

Countries with universal background checks and gun registries experience significantly fewer gun-related deaths. As a highly encrypted, tamper-resistant, and decentralized database, distributed ledger technology has the potential to serve as a distributed registry of guns. DLT could allow gun buyers to prove a lack of a criminal record (the equivalent of a background check) without giving up personal information. This survey of the blockchain landscape highlights several start-ups such as VeriTransfer and BitRail that are experimenting with DLT to do for firearms provenance what other blockchain innovators have done with food, cannabis, and pharmaceuticals without impeding the rights of legitimate gun owners.

Accessing Patient Health Records via Blockchain

This case study looks at the University Health Network’s process for analyzing blockchain use cases and narrowing efforts to design and test a use case for patient data. In consultation with IBM Canada, UHN decided to focus on providing patients with access to and control over their electronic medical and healthcare records. Ultimately, UHN leveraged the IBM Blockchain Platform, a permissioned blockchain environment developed by IBM and powered by Hyperledger Fabric.
